Halsey Unleashes Fierce New Single “Lonely Is The Muse”
Halsey continues to defy expectations and push the boundaries of genre with her latest release, “Lonely Is The Muse”, which dropped on Thursday, August 15th. The track marks a bold and defiant return to the artist’s rock roots, delivering a blistering critique of those who have tried to confine her identity and capitalize on her artistry.
The song’s pointed lyrics, co-written with industry heavyweight Stuart Price (known for his work with Madonna and Dua Lipa), cut deep into the heart of exploitation and self-empowerment: “I always knew I was a martyr and that Jesus was one too/ But I was built from special pieces that I learned how to unscrew,” Halsey sings in the ominous, lacerating chorus. The verse paints a haunting picture of a person repeatedly taken apart and reassembled to fit others’ expectations, a powerful metaphor for the pressures placed on artists in the spotlight.
Produced by Austin Corona, Wyatt Bernard, and Brandon Buttner, “Lonely Is The Muse” channels the grinding, industrial sound reminiscent of Halsey’s 2021 collaboration with Nine Inch Nails‘ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross on “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power”. The track’s turbulent guitars and dark, brooding drums underscore the raw intensity of Halsey’s message. She doesn’t hold back, especially in the biting second verse, where she calls out those who reduce her success to mere physicality and take credit for the artistry she’s poured her heart into. “So, where do I go in the process when I’m just an apparatus?/ I’ve inspired platinum records, I’ve earned platinum airline status,” she snarls, her voice a mix of anger and defiance.
This single follows the pop-infused “Lucky”, which dropped last month and offered a stark contrast to the gritty soundscape of “Lonely Is The Muse”. While “Lucky” flirted with the upbeat tones of pop icon Britney Spears, “Lonely Is The Muse” serves as a powerful reminder of Halsey’s versatility and refusal to be pigeonholed.
Fans got an early taste of the track during Halsey’s headlining performances at Budapest’s Sziget Festival and Helsinki’s Flow Festival last week. The singer also surprised a lucky audience at a secret club show at Koko in London on August 14th, where she delivered a raw and electrifying live preview of the song, alongside another new track titled “Ego”.
“Lonely Is The Muse” is the third song from Halsey’s highly anticipated fifth album, as she also dropped the pre-single “The End”, and her first release since signing with Columbia Records after parting ways with longtime label Capitol. While details about the album’s release date remain under wraps, this latest single hints at a body of work that promises to be as unflinchingly honest and genre-defying as anything she’s done before.
With “Lonely Is The Muse”, Halsey once again proves she’s an artist who can’t be boxed in — and that’s exactly how she likes it.
