BANKS Releases a Cover of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop”

American singer-songwriter BANKS has unveiled a mesmerizing new release, a reimagining of Massive Attack’s 1998 trip-hop masterpiece “Teardrop”.

The track marks some of her first new material since the deluxe re-release of her fifth studio album, “Off With Her Head”, earlier this year, and it finds her channeling one of her deepest musical inspirations.

Produced alongside longtime collaborator Rod Castro, BANKS’ version stays true to the song’s hushed atmosphere and steady drum pulse while reshaping its hazy trip-hop layers into something darker and more intimate. Her airy, multi-layered vocals take center stage, weaving through subtle effects, haunting vocalizations, and textured backing harmonies that transform the classic into a spellbinding alt-pop confession.

Speaking on the release, BANKS shared:
“Massive Attack has always been a deep well of inspiration for me. Their song “Teardrop” is one of those rare songs that stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. This version is my way of letting it move through me — a quiet homage to their brilliance, while finding space for my own voice within it.”

It’s a fitting follow-up to last year’s fiery collaboration with Doechii on “I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend”. Where that track was bold, defiant, and fashion-forward, “Teardrop” offers the shadowed counterpart: quiet, hypnotic, and reverent. It reflects the duality BANKS has been honing in recent years, balancing confrontation with communion, vulnerability with power.

For longtime fans of BANKS’ moody downtempo works like “Goddess”, “The Altar” and “III”, her “Teardrop” cover feels like a homecoming, but one that pushes into even darker, deeper territory ahead.

As she prepares for the next leg of her Off With Her Head Tour, this release stands as both a tribute to her influences and a bold signpost of where she’s headed, an artist unafraid to honor the past while carving out her own future.
